Musical instrument digital interface -- more commonly known as MIDI -- is a versatile digital audio format. Unlike true-to-source recordings such as MP3, ADX and OGG, MIDIs rely on the skill of the creator to make them sound their best. (Of course, the hardware used to listen to a MIDI also plays a part in how it sounds.) When it comes to creating a MIDI, there's more to it than just hitting the record button. A lot more, in fact. Essentially, the creator of a MIDI has to pick apart the original song to examine the rhythms, melodies, harmonies and everything else, just so it can all be recreated note by note in a sequencing program. The process can be slow and difficult at times, but the outcome of a great sounding MIDI is well worth it.
